Water is Precious in the Desert

October 26th - December 16th, 2024
The Cross Art Projects
Eora/Sydney

"Water is Precious in the Desert, is an exhibition about water in danger. Ancient aquifers — those well-known like the Great Artesian Basin and others, little-known, like the aquifers lying under arid lands in the Northern Territory — are the major sources of fresh water for the world’s driest and flattest continent. Disquiet over water, land and resource extraction lie at the heart of the northern Australian policy narrative, known by the euphemism “develop the north”.

The artists draw inspiration from their rich and complex country and time spent camping at soaks and observing, collecting, and hunting seasonal flora and fauna. Some water places are sacred sites needing to be appeased according to law and custom. More broadly, looking after country relates to regular burns, cleaning out soaks and related activities. Hence, artists working at Arlpwe Art and Culture Centre in Ali Curung community, are renowned for painting the vast seasonal almanac of the seed story and bush medicine." - excerpt from the exhibition catalogue by Jo Holder

Tennant Creek Brio: Juparnta Ngattu Minjinypa Iconocrisis

September 21st - November 17th, 2024
Australian Centre for Contemporary Art
Naarm/Melbourne

"Tennant Creek Brio: Juparnta Ngattu Minjinypa Iconocrisis references The Brio’s practice of reinscribing their experiences, cultural identity and mark making onto salvaged found materials such as oil barrels, car bonnets, solar panels, poker machines, television screens, and geological maps from the abandoned Warrego mine. Confronting the current state of polycrisis, of belief systems in conflict, and contested and scarring histories, the exhibition stresses an urgent need for truth-telling, future-thinking, collectivity and action. Exploring themes of extraction, reclamation and collaboration, The Brio’s artworks reveal the deeply personal and complex intergenerational influences that continue to shape and entwine the artists’ lives, identities and future-thinking." - Australian Centre for Contemporary Art

MARKUSOOH, MAKUSOOH, MARUSOOH

June 22nd - July 13th
8 Hele
Mparntwe/Alice Springs

"MARKUSOOH, MAKUSOOH, MARUSOOH is Double O’s first solo exhibition and debuts a series of new works on paper. The title arises from the signatures given to the first three pastel on paper drawings that he created in Ali Curung and reflects a truth in his work; there is similarity, but never sameness or predictability. Perhaps informed by the materiality of Double O’s new paper endeavours the companion paintings share a tonal and auratic lightness, a noted departure from the dense, grimy aesthetic of previous work presented alongside the Brio." - excerpt from the exhibition catalogue by Harry Price

Cross Section - Tennant Creek Brio

March 16th - April 13th
Cassandra Bird Gallery
Eora/Sydney

"The Brio fuse Aboriginal cultural heritage, the industrial materiality of the mining industry and regional and global art influences to express and re-imagine their cross-cultural identities and the reality of unresolved tensions between Indigenous and settler colonial cultures, the renewal and remaking of cultural practices, and the collaborative resilience of a frontier community. The collective’s deeply personal artworks draw upon complex intergenerational influences that continue to shape the artists lives and identities." - Cassandra Bird Gallery
